KARATE
Karate is a self-defense system that utilizes the entire body.
Punches and strikes can be executed using the fist, elbow or
hands while kicks and strikes with the legs use the feet, shins
and knees.  Karate is often seen by the general public as a brutal
and lethal art, but to true practitioners, the exact opposite is
true.  Karate carries the motto "Karate Ni Santi Nashi" or "There
is no first attack in karate."  One does not waiver from this code.

Karate translated means "empty hand" and the art is practiced
mostly with the bare hands and feet, thus turning the body into
an effective weapon to defend and attack whenever appropriate.
Karate is a very effective form of self-defense and is one of the
most widely practiced of the oriental martial arts.  It evolved
during one of the Japanese occupations of Okinawa and its roots
can be traced back to ancient India and China.

There are numerous styles of karate, and it has spread into many
other martial arts.  Various styles are the result of the personal
ideas and beliefs of many individual instructors who teach basic
techniques and decide how they should be executed and
emphasized. Thus, each school will have differences that
illustrate the ideas of the instructor.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MASTER GERARD DURANT
                        AND GOSHIN JUTSU KARATE

GRAND MASTER GERARD DURANT
                                     (1922-1991)

Goshin Jutsu Karate is based in Northwestern Pennsylvania with
schools in PA, Ohio, New York, Texas, Georgia and Florida.
Gerard Durant is credited as the founder of Goshin Jutsu in this
area.  He was born in Utica, N.Y. and was introduced to Jiu Jutsu
and Savate by his father.  He worked with various other
instructors from Erie, PA and met Wilhelm Reeders and studied
with him for some time.

When Master Reeders left the area, Master Durant continued to
teach and pass his knowledge to others while perfecting his style
of Goshin.  Master Durant took the best of what he learned from
all his past instructors and what he learned on the "mean
streets" growing up and devised a very formidable, original style
of karate.

Goshin Jutsu works incredibly well as a self defense art and that
is a proven fact.  Walk in to any Goshin Jutsu dojo and you will
be impressed by the discipline, humility and focus that the
instructors and students display, not to mention the devastating
techniques they execute with absolute precision.

Goshin Jutsu continues to change and grow even though it is not
connected to a "traditional school" of karate, but it is not
hindered by one either.  This style was originally a self defense
system with an emphasis on kumite (sparring) that later grew
and added katas that were introduced by Grandmaster Durant.

Many Goshin Jutsu black belts are continuing to train and pass
on their knowledge to others, thus keeping alive the tradition of
Goshin Jutsu and the memory and accomplishments of
Grandmaster Durant...to learn from others and share it so it can
be the best style possible for future generations to come.
